Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry
Post: February 2015
In 2013 the Endangered Species Act regulations were amended and include changes to how Drainage Activities are conducted around Endangered Species. Under the revised regulation Drainage Act activities around an endangered species or species habitat is subject to a MNRF registration or permit process. Effective July 1, 2015 existing ESA-Exemption Agreements are no longer valid. Municipalities working under existing Endangered Species Act Exemption Agreements will be required to comply with the new registration or permit process. The DSAO has established a MNRF-ESA Committee to work with the MNRF to create templates and guidance documents to assist Drainage Superintendents with complying with these changes.
Distribution Maps
Post: January 2014
Updated distribution maps for fish and mussel species at risk in Ontario have been finalized and are currently posted on Conservation Ontario’s website . These maps are valid for use until May 2014 and have been updated to include new data from Fisheries and Oceans, several Conservation Authorities, Species at Risk permits and recovery team data. They are intended to replace the original maps that were posted on Conservation Ontario’s website last year.
These maps are proving to be a useful resource for integrating the Species at Risk Act (SARA) legislation into current referral review processes. The maps were designed to assist Drainage Superintendents in the screening of projects for the presence of aquatic species at risk at proposed development projects sites.
